Or like the game his little nieces played when they ripped petals off a flower: “I do. I don’t. I do. I don’t.”

And it was this cat and mouse chase forcing him to come out of his shell. His Papa had always said, “Go after what you want like the world will end tomorrow.” Not that it would, at least not now that the Germans had been beaten in the war, but Lila was an ever-present pulsing affair he could not escape. He wanted the woman with everything inside (and outside) of him.

He held her hand on the stroll up her walkway, breathing in the scent of her perfume he so enjoyed. There was a softness to her demeanor as they quietly chatted about Thanksgiving dinner, and he couldn’t help but stroke her face one last time before departing.

“I really had fun tonight,” she said, staring deep into his eyes. “Thank you for taking me along. It’s meant a lot.”

“Were you really going with Susan and Rex?” He didn’t believe it—hadn’t bought her story the moment she told it but his curiosity needed quenching.

“No.” She snorted. “I was just scared when you asked me.”

Her eyes flitted to the ground and she blinked hard.

“What is it, Lila?”

She licked her lips. “Daddy practically disowned me a while back. My mother supported his decision and my brother...well...let’s just say he’s the golden child out of the two of us. And it hurts.”

It was the deepest truth he’d ever heard out of her, and it stirred a compassionate flame within his soul. “Why?”

She picked a loose thread on her coat. “I made some mistakes. Poor choices. We all do. It’s part of being human. But not my daddy. He called me improper. Indecent. And cut me off. It’s why I had to get the seamstress gig at the theater. I had a decent savings when left New York but I traveled for a bit. Went back to Boston. Ended up in Seattle. Shopped a bit too much and all my money slowly disappeared. Anyway, it’s my fault. They didn’t even pick up the phone when I called this morning.”

“I’m sorry.” He embraced her, holding her thin frame in his strong arms. “How terrible.”

She nuzzled against his chest. “You’ve given something today I’ve been needing for a while. Joy.”

“I’m so glad to hear it, baby.”

All he did was hold her, letting her know he would be a fortress of comfort from the storms of her life. “You know something?” he added.

“Hm?”

“We’re lucky.”

“In what we way?”

“Not many fake relationships go this well.”

At that, she had to laugh.

“Count us in as blessed then,” she said with a smile. “Want to come in for a bit?”

He stroked her cheek with the back of his hand. “Not sure if I can trust myself if I did.”

She traced the outline of his jaw. “Thanks for understanding.”

“You’re welcome.”

“Suppose I’ll get going now.”

“Yep. Goodnight.”

“Goodnight.”

She kissed his lips and unlocked the door, tossing a glance at him over her shoulder. “Call me tomorrow?”

“Sure, doll.
